This excellent site gives access to the civil registration register indexes. It is not complete, but up to the 1940s coverage is extremely high. Currently 203 million entries and about 1 million added every month. Brilliant - and free! There are two other related sites but coverage is much less impressive. Search Google for Freecen & Freereg (i.e. census and parish registers)

Gives access to civil registration indexes for selected authorities, inc Cheshire and Staffs. Less complete than Freebmd but goes into more recent times and has one or two other advantages: you can identify the parish.

Good selection of directories - searchable facsimilies (places and dates). Not an easy site to use - can be frustrating and slow - but there they are.
